One more American grunge / rock /  music icon gone …

Chris Cornell – singer of excellent rock group Soundgarden died suddenly and unexpected at 52

(he committed suicide - hanged himself).

My deep condolences to his family – wife Vicky, daughter Toni and son Christopher Nicolas as same as former / first wife Susan Silver and daughter Lillian Jean also to his parents Ed Boyle and Karen Cornell and sisters Katy, Maggie, Suzy and brothers Patrick, Peter.

For me it is a little bit personal sadness, because I’ve met him a few times – first I was introduced to him (hand to hand shake) 1989 in LA when Soundgarden + manager Susan Silver came to sign A&M Records contract and then inside ‘The Central saloon’ on 1^st st., - while my Seattle visit same year summer.

It was hot (as usual at this time in California) June 1989. Courtesy of my friend Dennis White, who helped me get political asylum in the USA I lived at 542 S. Coronado street, apt. 3 in Los Angeles - quite a legendary place because near the famous 'McArthur Park' and the lake of the same name and monumental, beautiful - 'Park Plaza Hotel' where once the Oscars were held and where in the ‘40 and ‘50 the biggest Hollywood stars lived.

Dennis has lived in LA for 2 years but came from Seattle. One day he announced that would be a little cramped in our apartment, because at the request of his good friend name Bruce Pavitt from 'Sub Pop Records' a few guys from Seattle visit us.

They went off a hot evening in the number of 4 loud, loquacious male and one girl. These guys were four members of a completely unknown band at that time name - Soundgarden and the girl was Susan Silver - group manager.

We met each other for a moment, squeezing each other's hands in a welcome gesture. One of the group was smiling like a steady way but very taciturn, perhaps a max shy boy, who later turned out to be a big rock and grunge star - Chris Cornell.

Dennis rewrote them for a moment from where I came from and who I am - and that is "DJ", and that "he escaped from communist Poland and waiting for political asylum." It was obvious that their interest was frivolous and conversations turned to other tracks.

At one point, all of them moved briskly because Susan pulled out a vinyl single and put it on the turntable. It sounded like something between Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. Heavy rock and striking very original vocal. Turning to me, Suzan asked - somehow: "You are deejay so we are interested in your opinion about the recording?"

Well - as a disco deejay starting in the early 1970's, I was as solidly prepared for such music - because in the early discos it was / I played such hard-rock-blues music to dance. I mentioned both of these above earlier listed English band names, adding that the vocal is very different however and so their music is different. Apparently they liked what I said because one of them knocked on my 'Budwiser' beer bottle saying something fast (for me incomprehensible) to the rest of the Americans :-)))))

This was my accidental contact with the beginnings of 'grunge' - a totally unique Seattle sound and one of the most important representatives of this genre / rock-music style - Chris Cornell and Soundgarden.

On this listening and chatting, the time went by quickly - late night. It was noticeable a fatigue of our Seattle guests, whose decided go to sleep a few hours for the reason to rush to sign a record contract at A&M Records in Hollywood in the morning. It was after all the purpose of their arrival to Los Angeles.

The apartment was small and for sleeping they spread out onto the carpets lying on the floor which remember / memorable glory of Hollywood. There was no way of having so many (7) beds. There was one real bed and Susan lay down on it.

In the morning when I woke up - they were gone - they went to Hollywood for their dreams :-))))))

Chris Cornell – wokalista znakomitej grupy rockowej Soundgarden zmarł nagle i niespodziewanie

w wieku 52 lat (popełnił samobójstwo - powiesił się).

Moje głębokie kondolencje dla jego rodziny - żony Vicky, córki Toni i syna Christopher Nicolas

jak również dla byłej / pierwszej żony Suzan Silver i ich córki Lilian Jean, także dla rodziców Eda Boyle i Karen Cornell oraz sióstr Katy, Maggie, Suzy i braci Patrick, Peter.

Dla mnie jest to taki trochę większy, osobisty smutek, ponieważ spotkałem go kilka razy - po raz pierwszy zostałem mu przedstawiony + wzajemny uścisk dłoni w powitalnym geście w 1989 w LA, kiedy Soundgarden i ich menedżer Suzan Silver podpisali umowę z A&M Records oraz potem gdy odwiedziłem Seattle w tym samym roku latem.

... trochę osobistego smutku

Był gorący (jak zwykle o tej porze w Kalifornni) czerwiec 1989 roku. Dzięki uprzejmości mego kolesia Dennis White, który pomagał mi w zdobyciu azylu politycznego w USA mieszkałem przy 542 S. Coronado street, apt. 3 w Los Angeles - dość legendarnym miejscu bo w pobliżu słynnego ‘McArthur Park’ i jeziorka o tej samej nazwie oraz monumentalnego i przepięknego - ‘Park Plaza Hotel’ gdzie kiedyś odbywały się gale oscarowe i gdzie w latach ’40 i ’50 zamieszkiwały największe gwiazdy Hollywood. Dennis mieszkał w LA od 2 lat ale pochodził z Seattle. Pewnego dnia zapowiedział, że zrobi się trochę ciasno w naszym mieszkaniu bo na prośbę jego dobrego przyjaciela z Seattle - Bruce Pavitt z ‘Sub Pop Records’ odwiedzą nas kolesie, właśnie z Seattle.

Zjechali pewnego gorącego wieczoru w liczbie 4 głośnych i rozgadanych chłopa oraz jedna dziewczyna. Owymi chłopami byli 4 członkowie zupełnie nieznanego wówczas zespołu Soundgarden, a dziewczyną była Suzan Silver – manager grupy.

Poznawaliśmy się przez chwilę ściskając sobie wzajemnie dłonie w powitalnym geście. Jednym z tej grupy był uśmiechający się jakby na stałe, ale bardzo małomówny, zdawać się mogło max nieśmiały chłopak, który potem okazał się wielkim gwiazdorem rocka i grunge – Chris Cornell.

Dennis nawijał im przez chwilkę skąd się tu wziąłem i kim jestem – a to że „DJ”, a to że „uciekł z komunistycznej Polski i czeka na azyl polityczny”. Widać było, że to ich ździebko zaciekawiło po czym rozmowy potoczyły się na inne tory.

W pewnym momencie towarzystwo żwawiej się poruszyło bo Suzan wyciągnęła winylowego singla i zapuściła na gramofonie. Brzmiało to jak coś pomiędzy Black Sabbath i Led Zeppelin. Zwalisty, ciężki rock i wybijający się bardzo oryginalny wokal. Obracając się do mnie Suzan zapytała – jakoś tak: „jesteś deejayem więc ciekawi nas twoja opinia o nagraniu?”

No cóż – jako deejay disco zaczynający we wczesnych latach ‘70 byłem jakby solidnie przygotowany na taką muzę – bo we wczesnych dyskotekach grało się taką właśnie hard-rock-blues muzykę do tańca. Wymieniłem oba te wcześniej wypisane z nazwy angielskie zespoły dodając, że wokal jednak jest bardzo inny i dzięki temu ich muza odróżnia się. Najwyraźniej spodobało im się to co powiedziałem bo jeden z nich stuknął się z moją butelką piwa ‘Budwiser’ mówiąc coś szybko i dla mnie niezrozumiale do reszty amerykańskiego towarzystwa :-)))))

Takie to było moje przypadkowe zetknięcie z początkami ‘grunge’ czyli totalnie unikalnym Seattle sound i jednymi z najważniejszych reprezentantów tego gatunku / stylu rock-muzyki – Chris Cornell i Soundgarden.

Na tym słuchaniu i gadaniu czas szybko zleciał - zapadła późna noc. Dało się zauważyć zmęczenie towarzystwa, które zadecydowało, że musi przespać kilka godzin aby rano popędzić na podpisanie kontraktu płytowego w wytwórni A&M Records w Hollywood. To był przecież cel ich przyjazdu do Los Angeles.

Mieszkanie było małe i do spania towarzystwo rozłożyło się na pamiętających świetność Hollywood dywanach leżących na podłodze. O tylu łóżkach (7) nie było mowy. Było jedno i na nim położyła się rzecz jasna Suzan.

Rano kiedy się obudziłem – już ich nie było – pojechali do Hollywood po te swoje marzenia :-))))))
